🏮 If you've been learning Chinese with Hari, you're already on the path to unlocking one of the world's richest cultures. But nothing beats the immersive experience of being in China itself. In this post, we’ll explore how to make the most of your trip to Beijing — from practicing Mandarin in real-life scenarios to discovering hidden gems that textbooks don’t cover.

🗣️ Language Tips for Travelers

  • Survival Phrases: Brush up on essentials like:

    • “多少钱?” (How much is it?) —duō shǎo qián?

    • “我可以试试吗?” (Can I try it on?) — wǒ kě yǐ shì shi ma?

  • Tone Practice: Beijing’s local accent is a great way to train your ear for Mandarin tones — especially the famous “儿化音” (er-sound) — 儿化音 ér huà yīn

  • Listen to Authentic Beijing Mandarin: To get a feel for the rhythm and tone of Beijing-accented Mandarin. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the local soundscape before your trip.

🏯 Must-Visit Spots

  • The Forbidden City (故宫) — 故宫 gù gōng: A treasure trove of imperial history. Try reading signs in Chinese and asking guides questions in Mandarin.

One of Hari’s favorite spots in Beijing! The rich sense of history is captivating — and I absolutely adore the cats on the wall!

  • Hutongs (胡同) — 胡同 hú tòng: Wander through these alleyways to experience old Beijing. Strike up a chat with shopkeepers — they’re often friendly and curious about foreigners learning Chinese.

🍜 Food Adventures

  • Peking Duck (北京烤鸭) —  běi jīng kǎo yā: Learn how to order it like a local.

  • Street Snacks: Try:

    • “糖葫芦” (candied hawthorn) —  táng hú lu (to be honest, I can barely handle the sweetness of 糖葫芦, but, please give it a try if this is your first time!)

    • “豆汁儿” (fermented mung bean juice — an acquired taste!) —  dòu zhīr

  • Dining Etiquette: Practice polite phrases like:

    • “谢谢” (thank you) —  xiè xiè

    • “好吃” (delicious) —  hǎo chī

📚 Hari’s Learning Challenge

Before you go, Hari recommends a mini challenge:

“Learn 10 new food-related words and use them all during your trip. Bonus points if you can order without using English!”

🧳 Final Tips

  • Bring a notebook to jot down new words you hear.

  • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes — locals appreciate the effort.

  • Share your experience with Hari’s community when you return!
